PUBLIC SPACE AND PUBLIC LIFE SURVEY
CLIENT: CITY OF SYDNEY

Gehl Architects was invited to cast a view on how public spaces in Sydney are performing. It showed a city choking in vehicular traffic with no balance between the transport modes: Pedestrians and cyclists are at the bottom of the agenda and conditions are poor for people who choose sustainable transport modes.

An equally important problem is the ‘visual environment’ and the lack of celebration of the waterfront. The recommendations describe the need for change of mind-set; where a more holistic is used thinking of traffic planning and public space planning as one.
